At Carmans, reducing environmental impact is not the end point, it’s the starting point. Since the 1990s, the Blue Economy has run like a blue thread through everything we do. Long before terms such as “circular economy” and “sustainable construction” became commonplace, we were already looking for solutions that made sense both ecologically and economically, always with a focus on quality, affordability and feasibility.
From the very first certified mobile crushing installation in Belgium to our own washing installation, concrete plant and mixing installation: Carmans innovates at every level. Our concrete products are made using recycled materials, and every step of the process takes place at a single central site in Lummen. By handling everything in one location, from waste stream to finished product, we keep the loop short, maintain full control and minimise CO₂ emissions. And perhaps even more importantly: we keep the entire responsibility in our own hands.
Blue Technology also means: using energy wisely. Carmans produces 100% of its own energy today, with a combination of solar and wind power. In total, we've got 2.2 MW of installed solar capacity and 6.15 MW of wind capacity. The result? An annual reduction of 14,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. Or to put it more concretely: enough energy to let 10,000 families drive 15,000 km a year by car.
Carmans builds not only on experience, but also on knowledge. That’s why we team up with external experts in every field to keep improving our processes. Even on a strategic level, we keep a close eye on new insights. For example, we base our policies on the principles of Cleantech, a vision that’s also endorsed by KU Leuven.
Cleantech is all about producing goods, delivering services, and carrying out processes with:
minimal use of raw materials and the lowest possible environmental impact;
high energy efficiency and minimal waste production;
use of renewable materials and energy;
and, as a result, economic added value.
In short: we don’t just do what we do for the sake of it. We think ahead, we test, and we’re not afraid to make adjustments where needed. That way, we keep not just our production sharp, but also our vision.
A circular approach is only complete when it results in a tangible end product. At Carmans, that product is BLUEBLOCKS: stackable concrete blocks made from recycled secondary raw materials and produced using our own renewable energy. Their rounded interlocking studs make them easy and quick to install, delivering a clean and functional finish.
BLUEBLOCKS are more than just concrete: they embody everything Carmans stands for. Quality, affordability, and sustainability all come together here in one certified end product. The ultimate proof that a blue vision doesn’t just sound good, it actually works.
