CO₂ Performance Ladder

At Carmans, we strive to continuously reduce our ecological footprint. That is why we work with the CO₂ Performance Ladder, a recognized management system that encourages companies to operate in an energy-conscious way and to reduce their emissions step by step.

This methodology helps us to map our energy consumption and emissions in detail and to improve them continuously. We not only limit emissions within our own activities, such as production, transport and installations, but also actively promote sustainable cooperation throughout our entire value chain.

The principles of the Blue Economy serve as our compass: reusing materials, optimizing processes and leveraging innovation to create more value with less impact. Through the CO₂ Performance Ladder, we translate this vision into concrete actions, aiming for a climate-conscious, future-oriented operation in which economic and ecological benefits go hand in hand.

Within Carmans, this policy is built on four pillars: Insight, Reduction, Transparency and Participation.

1. CO₂ Footprint

Within Carmans, energy consumption and CO₂ emissions are systematically recorded and analyzed across all business units, including production activities, equipment, transport and support services.

Reporting within the framework of the CO₂ Performance Ladder takes place on an annual basis. The current figures relate to the period from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.

Carmans’ total CO₂ footprint amounts to 14,481 tonnes per year. Of this total, 85.8% is attributable to upstream activities, mainly linked to the production and supply of materials. 12.9% of emissions result from direct emissions at our own sites, while 1.1% is related to downstream processes. Thanks to significant investments in renewable energy production, the share of electricity in total emissions has been reduced to less than 1%.

2. Reduction Strategy

Carmans endorses the international climate objectives aimed at limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Within this framework, the company has defined scientifically based emission reduction targets in accordance with the methodology of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets cover both the short and long term and include emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3.


Concretely, Carmans commits to reducing its total CO₂ emissions by 28.5% by 2035 compared to the reference year 2023. In the long term, the company aims to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050.

These objectives are supported by a broad range of energy-saving and circular measures, including:

  • The gradual transition of the truck fleet to HVO, followed by full electrification
  • Further electrification of the passenger car fleet, supported by green charging cards

  • Offices in Lummen operating on green electricity contracts

  • A strong focus on reuse and the use of secondary raw materials

  • Encouraging transport partners to adopt sustainable mobility through multimodal transport and smart route planning

  • A sustainable mobility plan that encourages employees to choose environmentally friendly modes of transport


Through this integrated approach, Carmans combines operational efficiency with structural emission reductions across the entire value chain.

3. Participation in Sector and Value Chain Initiatives

We believe in open communication about our results, both internally and towards our partners. Through internal briefings, toolbox meetings and reporting, we actively involve employees in our sustainability objectives. Customers and stakeholders can find clear information on energy consumption, emissions and reductions on our website, via newsletters and in our reports.

Carmans actively participates in sectoral and value chain initiatives. We also encourage our partners to make the same sustainable choices — from green transport to material reuse — so that together we can accelerate the transition towards a climate-conscious construction sector.

To share our knowledge and further anchor our climate ambitions within an international context, Carmans is affiliated with the SME Climate Hub. Through this network, the company commits to taking concrete and scientifically substantiated steps towards net-zero emissions, in line with the objectives of the SBTi and the Paris Agreement.

The CO₂ Performance Ladder is a management system developed by SKAO (Foundation for Climate-Friendly Procurement and Business). This instrument helps organizations gain insight into their CO₂ emissions and reduce them in a structured manner. Additional information can be found on the SKAO website: https://www.skao.nl

Energy Production

At Carmans, we generate the majority of our energy ourselves. Thanks to a smart combination of solar panels, wind turbines and energy sharing, we currently cover more than 80% of our energy needs with renewable sources.

With an installed capacity of 2 MW of solar energy and 6.15 MW of wind energy, we produce approximately 12,000 MWh of green electricity each year. Since the establishment of our energy community in 2023, this locally generated energy has been efficiently distributed among our various sites.

By combining solar and wind energy, we ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply that makes our production processes largely energy-neutral. With a CO₂ reduction of more than 2,000 tonnes per year, Carmans demonstrates that sustainable production is not a vision of the future, but a daily reality.
